Is a Hosted Group Trip Right for You?

The support is there. The obligation isn’t.

One of my favorite parts of hosted travel: you can be part of the group without having to do everything as a group.
One of my favorite parts of hosted travel: you can be part of the group without having to do everything as a group.

When people hear the words “group trip,” I think some immediately picture matching shirts, scheduled group dinners every night, organized activities from morning until bedtime, and everybody moving around together in one big pack.

If that sounds exhausting to you, I understand. 😂

Because honestly, that doesn’t sound like the kind of vacation I want either.

When I host a cruise or group trip, I have zero expectations that everyone will do everything together.

Actually, I have zero expectations that you’ll do anything with the group if you don’t want to.

It’s your vacation.

You can join us for an excursion one day and spend the next day completely on your own. You can eat dinner with people you’ve met or make a reservation for two. You can come to something I’ve arranged, skip it, change your mind, sleep late, sit by the pool, wander around a port by yourself—or disappear from sail away until disembarkation.

I’m not taking attendance. 😂

So why travel with a hosted group at all?

Because sometimes it’s nice to know someone is there.

Especially if you’re a nervous first-time traveler, cruising for the first time, traveling internationally, or coming by yourself.

There’s a big difference between being required to travel with a group and knowing you have a group—and a host, there if you need them.

Before we leave, I’m helping my travelers understand what to expect. I’m answering questions. I’m watching deadlines. I’m thinking about transfers, hotels, excursions and all those little pieces that can feel overwhelming when you haven't done this before.

And once we get there, I’m there too.

That doesn’t mean nothing can go wrong. Travel is travel. Flights get canceled. Weather changes. Ports get missed. Plans change.

But you aren't trying to figure everything out without someone in your corner.

And then something else happens.

People meet people.

I’ve watched travelers who didn't know one another before a trip end up laughing together, going on excursions together, having dinner together and staying in touch afterward.

And I’ve watched other people happily do their own thing.

Both are doing it right.

That’s one of my favorite things about hosted travel. There is room for the person who wants the fun and camaraderie of traveling with other people, and there is room for the person who simply likes knowing there’s a familiar face nearby.

There’s room for couples.

There’s room for friends.

There’s room for solo travelers.

And there’s definitely room for the person who says, “I want to go, but I’m a little nervous about doing this.”

Is a hosted group right for you?

Maybe; if you like the idea of having some of the uncertainty taken out of travel without giving up your independence.

Maybe; if there’s somewhere you've always wanted to go, but you’ve been hesitant to do it alone.

Maybe; if you're a first-time cruiser and would feel better knowing someone experienced is sailing with you.

Or maybe you simply like knowing that you can participate when you want to and wander off when you don't.

The support is there. The obligation isn’t.

And no, you do not have to wear a matching shirt. 😂
