Thirsty Thursday: What Does Alaska Taste Like? Meet the Duck Fart

Quick answer: If you're traveling to Alaska, don't be surprised if someone asks whether you've tried a Duck Fart. It's a layered shot traditionally made with Kahlúa, Baileys Irish Cream and Crown Royal — and it's become one of those quirky drinks associated with an Alaska vacation.

Wait… a Duck Fart?

Yes. 😂

One of the things I love about traveling is discovering the little things nobody thinks to tell you before you go.

The foods. The drinks. The local traditions. The things you see on a menu and think, What in the world is THAT?

In Alaska, one of those things is the Duck Fart.

You'll find this little layered shot on drink menus around Alaska, and the name alone is usually enough to get a first-time visitor's attention.

What's in a Duck Fart?

A traditional Duck Fart combines three layers:

  • Kahlúa

  • Baileys Irish Cream

  • Crown Royal

The result is sweet, creamy, a little boozy and — despite that unfortunate name — actually pretty good.

And yes, I've had one. 😂

I wouldn't tell you it was an Alaska must-try if I hadn't been willing to try it myself!

Why I Love Little Travel Finds Like This

This is the stuff I want travelers to know.

Of course we're going to talk about glaciers, whales, mountains, cruise ports and what to pack for Alaska.

But sometimes it's the tiny, unexpected experiences that become part of the story you tell when you get home.

So if you're sitting in an Alaska saloon someday and someone asks:

“Have you had a Duck Fart yet?”

Don't look at them like they've lost their mind.

Now you're in on the joke. 😂

And if you're feeling adventurous?

Try one.

Then come back and tell me what you thought.

Would you try a Duck Fart in Alaska?

Until our next story,
— Gina Renee
